Ever wanted to try growing mushrooms on your own? Perhaps you already do. Either way it gos, Id love to help support you on your mushroom journey. When it comes to growing mushrooms, as a beginner you can think of it being very complex and it can seem overwhelming. Growing mushrooms does require practicing sterile techniques as much as possible to avoid the chances of contamination. The best way to avoid contamination as much as possible is to either work in a still air box (SAB) or in front of a flow hood.

For beginner’s we recommend starting off with a 5 pound grow bag consisting of coconut coir, vermiculite, gypsum and your choice of grain. At SporeDaddy’s our grow bag grain of choice is millet. This method is perfect for beginners because of how simple and easy the process is.

Purchase a spore or liquid culture syringe of your choice. Spray and wipe down the injection port and 5 pound grow bag with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Inject your spore or liquid culture syringe into the injection port. We highly recommend doing this in a still air box (SAB) or a room with not a lot of airflow going on. For the very best results of low contamination, a flow hood is the best option. Although it is not necessary for all in one grow bags.

Over the next 1-2 weeks you will begin to see white mycelium growth form in the bag and around the grain. This is a sign that your mushroom mycelium is growing and healthy. Once your grains are fully colonized and covered in mycelium, you can begin to gently break up the grain inside the bag (without damaging or opening the bag) and mix in with the substrate that originally sat on top of your grains.e motion identities that transform your brand.

Let the bag continue colonizing until the entire grow bag is completely covered in your pearly white mycelium. Usually takes about a 3-4 weeks to fully colonize after mixing. Once you are confident that your bag is fully colonized, spray and wipe down the all in one bag thoroughly with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol. Get a pair of scissors and clean them with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol as well. Cut the bag at the top below the filter patch to introduce fresh air into the bag. This will encourage the fruiting process. Fanning the bag once a day will help your mushrooms breath and induce fruiting stages.

To prevent side-pinning we recommend placing a rubber band around the middle of the fruiting block. This helps cut off oxygen below the rubber band, encouraging fruits to find the surface of the fruiting block. Over the next week you should start to see tiny mushroom pins emerging on the surface. Check your bag each day and watch your mushrooms grow ! For harvesting we like to recommend twisting and pulling the mushrooms out once the veil from the cap and stem is broken or when the stem is squishy like a marshmallow.

For the dehydration process we recommend using a dehydrator and setting the temp at 130 degrees for 8-10 hours. Congrats, enjoy your delicious mushrooms !!
